In the spring of 2018, the Department of State (DOS) proposed new rules which would modify the DS 160 and DS 260 which are used for both non-immigrant and immigrant visa applicants to obtain a visa from a US Consulate. Among the modifications was a proposal to identify social media platforms used for the past 5 years so that applicants could be better vetted. These proposed rules have now gone into effect and the revised forms are now in use and must be completed for an individual to be issued a visa. Individuals should be prepared to provide this info. as part of the forms preparation. Individuals should also review employment history and other relevant information to insure it is accurate and up to date. For more information on how the US government is using information obtained from social media check out this recent report from the Brennan Center for Justice.
