For those who hoped that Obama’s promise of Comprehensive Immigration Reform (“CIR”) would make their wait for a green card a little shorter, disappointing news arrived yesterday.

Obama announced that an overhaul of the country’s immigration system will have to be postponed until next year. In the interim, he made no mention of relief for the workers waiting for priority dates to become current or those who are turning away from employment in the U.S. for better options overseas. In the coming year, the focus will be in deterring illegal immigration rather than encouraging the legal immigration of those with skills needed in the U.S.
