Eyes Toward Iowa 01/02/08
The Blog took Christmas and New Years off, but we’re back. Tomorrow marks the official start of the year-long US Presidential election – the Iowa Caucus. The winners in Iowa will gain a head start in the run up for delegates. Each party’s delegate leader will get that party’s nomination.
For the Democrats, the pundits are calling Iowa a three way dead heat. John Edwards has been making a late push and needs to finish first in Iowa to remain in contention. The two national front runners: Hilary Clinton and Barak Obama need the other to do poorly in Iowa, although Iowa will not likely be fatal for either campaign.
As far as our pet issue is concerned none of the three leading Democrats have taken notable positions on immigration. Edwards has come out as a bit of a trade restrictionist, but that hasn’t exactly translated into anything close to an anti-immigration stance. Since he is the most liberal of the three it seems likely that he might push for a legalization program if elected, although that is by no means certain. Both Obama and Clinton have middle positions on immigration and would likely support a nurse visa program, although it is doubtful that either would outright push for the issue.
Tomorrow: a quick look at the Republicans.

I am a reader of this blog since 2006 november. It is meaning less to predict whether a democrat or republican president will be good for immigration( atleast for us nurses). Simply because We can’t be sure what will they do after winning the election .Remember During the US congress election in 2006 you have predicted ( in this blog)Democrats gaining majority in Senate and house is good for immigration but nothing happend. Infact some of our immigation bills are introduced by republicans senators. More over no matter who wins the election they will consider an immigration related bill only in 2009 and it is going to be too late. Let us try to get the Bridge legislation done in the first quarter of 2008 and that is is only hope now.
HLG – ARE YOU KIDDING US?
What about immigration legislation in 2008? Are you implying there won’t be anything this year? In your last blog you mentioned it would be possibility in early this year and now your talking of elections. Just tell us what the facts are so we can plan on alternates. Just like politicians we are given false hopes by you.
Do not blame on HLG.
Nobody is fortune-teller.
At least, HLG provides a blog place for us to exchange ideas.
I agree with jyao

let’s pray harder!!! to blame others for the gov’t's fault
I thank HLG for giving us an ideas and Im no way complaining to HLG if their predictions will not come true because they are lawyers and not fortune telllers. Keep up the good work HLG and thank you so much for this blog….
I too don’t have any hope on HLG. HLG is just fooling people. I am sorry to say that HLG is not making any efforts to push the Bridge legislation. Instead just playing around with assumptions and immaginations.
so far HLG or CTIHS has not made any efforts to push the bridge.
I don’t any more hope on HLG.
We don’t expect HLG to predict or tell fortunes, But we expect HLG to act. Do something. Atleast let know what efforts HLG or coalition or lobbyists hired has achived so far.
America is a marketing economy. Now the nursing product is out of market.
Try something else. As long as you have a valid license, you can go back to this market when it is prosperous.

Re- What happened in 07
While HLG is surely disappointed in the outcome of Healthcare visa reform in 2007, I don’t think that it is accurate to say that we’re giving false hopes, or that we’ve stopped pushing the issue. The October amendment that was offered and unanimously consented to by the Senate is the proof of that.
Thanks to those like jyao, toms, turgsmoy, etc.
Re- CTIHS
I think that we have been open about the lobbying and have posted updates, etc.
There is a CTIHS meeting on Monday in DC with lobbyists and several Congressional staffers. Believe me: the push is still on 100%.
HLG,
Thank you verymuch for your Update.

After the bill’s defeat, the Administration flip-flopped and adopted the “enforcement-only” approach of the bill’s opponents. They started the construction of a fence along the U.S.-Mexican border, ICE conducted a series of highly-publicized worksite raids and the DHS proposed “no-match letter” regulations to crack down on the hiring of undocumented workers.
The DREAM Act, which would have provided a way for children of undocumented persons to legalize their status if they pursued their college education or joined the military, could not obtain the required 60 votes to ward off a filibuster in the Senate.
After the defeat of the DREAM Act, other legislation – the AgJobs bill, legislation to recapture unused immigrant visas for nurses and therapists and a bill to increase the H-1B cap never even came up for a vote.
In the absence of Federal action on immigration, many states and localities have adopted extreme anti-immigrant laws.
What, then, is the prospect for meaningful immigration reform legislation in 2008? One should be careful about predicting the passage of immigration legislation in an election year, particularly when the subject has become so highly charged.
Unfortunately, we are not optimistic about the prospects for a comprehensive immigration reform law or even the passage of piecemeal legislation like the DREAM Act this year. We fully agree with the editorial which appeared in the New York Times (December 30) which stated:
“The truth is this: Americans cannot expect immigrants to serve them – to make their beds and meals, feed their babies and ailing parents, and pick their crops – while living in fear and hopelessness.”
To NANDANAM: Re-take IELTS or just go somewhere else..my Documents are also about to expire this mid year..no choice im tied up with contract…God Bless us All
neenu the thing is i need a social security number for my permanent license and apparently having one is going to take longer time due to the retro..how caN I prevent my ncex from being considered abandoned?
Hello Gonewest,
Neenu is right, you don’t need to worry about your nclex. You only take it once. You can get your license once you are in the states. I’ve read somewhere that we need to take the english test again when our visa screen certificate expires.
Take care!
Hi i feel to stay with hope another 3 more months. If nothing happens , make short changes in ur plans.Keep praying [devu iam from kerala]
thanks grace,i know its abit rational to get a lil neurotic about this, retro’s been hovering around like since forever.and we’re given no assurance as to when things will get back to normal.but then again,i cant lose hope,if things dont get better within the first quarter of 08 then probably its time to rethink plans.could there be really any development?let’s just hope, and pray more.
i hope for an immigration related bill by the first quarter.its the only hope there is before things get taken for granted come US election.
I can understand your feeling about the retro thing gonewest. I really feel uncertain as to when we can have our visas available. As of now there is really nothing we can do but to wait and pray that hopefully something positive might happen in the first quarter of 2008. If you are considering other options, that will also be good so you can also explore new places and experience new things while waiting for this dream to become a reality.
As for me, I am finishing my post-graduate studies and trying to look for a challenging job to sharpen my skills as a nurse to be better prepared for the event that visas will be available.
May God bless us and all the people who support EB3.
Hello,
Due to retrogression, my original sponsor is no longer pursuing my case. They are a major US corporation. They sent me a letter releasing my file, and i am in packet 3 already, but the letter says i can find another sponsor. However another agency has picked my case up. I hope the retrogression does not deepen so that my new sponsor abandons my petition as well.
